Winter: Take 2

by Avalon Sky

You know how I said that I thought it was getting warmer in France? I was wrong.“Winter: The Sequel” has arrived, and unlike many sequels, I would rate this one as pretty spectacular!

After almost a week of warmer weather, everyone seemed a bit disgruntled at having to don a few more layers on Monday morning. By Tuesday, word had spread that most of Northern France had been placed on ‘Orange Alert’ for severe weather and that international trains, and up to 25% of flights out of Paris were put on hold.

As I arrived at university on Tuesday morning, it looked like someone has sprinkled a light dusting of icing sugar over everything, and the snow was just starting to set in for the day. Two hours later, the world had turned white, covered by about 5-10cm of snow which continued to fall without respite all afternoon and into the early hours of Wednesday morning. Trams and busses were suspended for the afternoon, which resulted in a lot of pedestrian traffic as everyone made their way home on foot. It sounds pretty inconvenient, and I’m sure if the novelty wasn’t there, it would be…but I loved it! My feet ended up pretty soaked after I ran through some fresh powder and ended up with snow inside my snow boots, but it was definitely worth it!

Woke up on Wednesday morning to an absolute Winter Wonderland, where every building, car, and window frame looked like a little iced cake….there were even icicles!! To top it off, the sun was out in a glorious ciel bleu, making everything blindingly bright, but even more beautiful!

The trams were up and running again, but busses still suspended, so I made my way to University early and spent about 40 minutes running around the campus like a maniac taking photos. Once again, I ran through some fresh powdery snow (I can’t resist), and got my feet soaking wet. After class, what else was there to do but frolic in the snow? This is how Cecil the Snowman was born! Isn’t he just fabulous?!

I look out my window now, just the last few patches of snow remain, and I’m sad to report that Cecil has more than likely melted. However, I don’t think we’re off the hook that easily…there may be a third installment of winter for us yet! On va voir!
